I am in love with the opening volume of what promises to be a hugely gripping series. Erased follows the life of 29 year old Satoru Fujinuma whose dream is to become a mangaka but in reality is a pizza courier.

He often experiences deja vu which he terms 'Revival' whereby he relives the same scenes over and over again until he prevents the bad thing from happening. However, when he comes home to find his mother murdered one evening, his revival doesn't take him a few minutes back into the WOW! However, when he comes home to find his mother murdered one evening, his revival doesn't take him a few minutes back into the past, it takes him back to his 11 year-old self 18 years in the past. His mission is this: to prevent the disappearance and murder of his classmate, Kayo Hinazuki.

Kayo is a sweet and introverted child who we later find out is suffering at the hands of her abusive mother. Slowly, Fujinuma is able to befriend Hinazuki and the two grow closer much to the amusement of the former's friend group. Having changed his actions second time around to avoid repeating history and condemning Hinazuki to her tragic fate he believes that he has changed the future and therefore saved Hinazuki. These last concluding pages really affected me and I ended up crying.

Not only is the quality of the storytelling superb but the artwork is very dramatic and gothic which I think really emphasised the sheer tragedy the readers are faced with at the end. Quite simply, one of the best mangas I have ever read! View all 6 comments. It took a little while for the story to get started, but once it did, I was completely hooked in. I am very excited to continue on with the second volume and see where the story goes. Jun 03, Mir rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic , memory. Very interesting contrast, reading this and "A Distant Neighborhood" on the same weekend.

Annoyingly, they share the abrupt ending of volume 1 as well as the concept of returning to your childhood self to live over the experience. Dec 29, Skye Kilaen rated it it was amazing Shelves: 0-graphic-novels , fave-comics-graphic-novels , comics-diverse-poc.

Mini-review: Time-travel crime manga, completely engrossing, how had I never read this before?! Seriously, y'all, it's so good! I couldn't put it down until I got to the end of the series. Content warnings: child abuse, murder, probably some other stuff.

Satoru was a character that I could easily relate too.

He was doing what he needed to do to get by and trying to figure out how he was going to reach his dream. He has a big heart that does care about others that showed the deeper into the story I got. Revival was interesting. At first it was jarring as I had no idea what was happening as I was gifted this book and had never seen the anime or live-action , so it took me a little bit to understand what was going on, but as soon as I understood I found myself paying more attention to the panels and trying to figure out what needed to be changed.

It was a concept I really enjoyed seeing. The suspense built slowly over time to the point where I was sucked in and didn't notice just how engulfed in the story I was. It was wonderful and left me really hungry for the next volume as I need to know what happens. The pacing throughout this was superb! Jan 23, Damaris M rated it really liked it. He works part-time delivering pizzas and keeps trying to sell his manga, with no luck. Never socially adept, his only friend as a child was a young man named Jun Shiratori, who is later blamed for the murder of three children. As a result, Shiratori is on death row, awaiting his final days. Oh yeah, Fujinuma also has something he calls Revival - a power that sends him back in time to stop bad things from happening to other people. Most of the time the jump is just a few minutes, and it often ends badly for him.

But when something truly horrible happens, he's sent back in time eighteen years. He's just in time to try to stop the real serial killer from killing three classmates, starting with a quiet, isolated girl named Kayo Hinazuki. Fujinuma gets the chance to answer the question we've all asked ourselves: If I could do it again, knowing what I know now, what would I change, and how?

But it was incredibly close. The story sucked me in right away. We see Fujinuma experience a Revival early on, and see how painful an experience it could be for him. The jarring moment of realization that he's entered a Revival, the frustration of having it start again and again as he searches for the problem, and the fall out of saving someone car accident and near fall down an elevator shaft are the two we see.

We also see bits of the past that interact with the here and now, most notably his interactions with his mother and the non-fiction book he picks up by chance. Once Fujinuma goes back, the realization dawns on him that he can fix this. He can save the kids, and Shiratori, and maybe even himself. His acquaintances become real friends. He reaches out to Hinazuki, something childhood him would never have done, and becomes something of a white knight for her. They even end up "dating" in the way 10 year olds do - holding hands and just being together.

He treasures his time with his mother, appreciating the things about her that used to make him crazy. But he makes mistakes too. Memory isn't perfect, being driven leads to other distractions, no one believes a little kid, and more than one person have suspicions about his new behavior. And in the end? Well, I can't spoil that. You need to experience it yourself. Manga is read "backwards" - back to front, right to left.

It's notorious for having some sketchy artwork from time to time. Erased is read traditionally, but the artwork never falters.

Erased Omnibus Series

There are nice details of day-to-day life, and I enjoyed that none of the signs, books and even background noises were in kanji with translations underneath the frame. It felt more immersive and drew me in even further. Jun 17, Yon Nyan BiblioNyan rated it really liked it Shelves: library , favourite-manga , manga-seinen. I watched the anime first while it was simulcasting a couple of years ago, and then watched the live-action about a month or so ago on Netflix.

The story really intrigued me, and I felt it was one of the better crime mysteries that I had seen in a long time. One of my goals for the summer is to re-watch the live-action so that I can do a proper review for it, but in order to give it my very best, I decided to hunt down the original source material, the manga, so that I can do a bit of a comparison for the two.

A couple weeks ago I managed to find Erased Volume 1, which is a two-volume English omnibus for the series, at my local library. Feeling quite shocked and wholly excited, I went ahead and checked it out. After sitting down and reading through it, I can honestly say that even if you have seen the televised adaptations, I think you should give the manga a go as it was rather excellent.
