While I found this helpful, a new writer with high literary aspirations may be put off. James Scott Bell presents an excellent, thorough presentation of developing the plot and structure of a book.
He gives tools to use that enable various writing styles and methods to 'fit' the principles of what works. He emphasizes action that brings the reader to be engrossed in the character's conflict.
He demonstrates how to hook the reader from the beginning. Bell provides help for those struggling books that flounder in the middle. He shows how to leave the reader satisfied at the end. His methods are helpful for those who organize and for those who don't. His approach is logical with the spontaneity required for freshness and originality.
It is a resource that I will keep on my shelves for reading againto remind and to assimilate what I didn't 'get' the first time. Marissa Meyer recommended this book on her blog recently, and I thought if she recommended it, it was worth a read. I felt it was a fabulous "craft" book, and I underlined a lot of points that I know I will come back to. I see this as a great reference book that I will use when I'm both writing and editing. It was both easy to read and engaging. I would recommend this to any writer. It's a great review on all things related to plot. Here at Walmart.

His tips take into account the anxieties that come with novel writing and supplies the reader with personal anecdotes from his own journey. The guide is organized and linear. Along with the basic formula of a plot, Bell suggests techniques to revise your plot and story structure. To make the process easier, he even offers a different perspective of revision and editing your work in progress. Instead of seeing it as a tedious chore you have to check off your list, you should think of revision as an exciting way to spice up your writing.
You can control how you view your scene and give it the creativity it deserves that readers will enjoy. The guide also has a section for exercises you can implement on your own writing. From character arcs to complex plots, Bell offers three activities at the end of each chapter and delves into what makes each exercise work.
His tips are fundamental, and for experienced writers, the tips in this book are redundant. In this regard, James Scott Bell delivers on its promise.
He explains what it means for a story to have a plot and structure, how multiple plots can still tell a coherent narrative, and how you should revise if you hit a plateau.
