This chapter examines interventions by three artists, Fred Wilson, Yinka Shonibare and Rina Banerjee, who all take a critical de- and postcolonial approach to the institutional structures and spaces of Western museums.

Mining the Museum was based on a collaboration that allowed the artist to interview the staff and to have open access to the collection, including the objects and histories that had been hidden away in the museum's basement. Like Wilson, Shonibare highlights the complexity and reciprocity of interracial and colonial relations.

In this chapter, the author, through a family history, speaks of how forced exile persists through generations. He narrates the series of events that took place after he left England and moved to United States, including the catastrophic failures of nuclear reactors.

The discussion largely focuses on the incidence of cancers caused by exposure to radioactivity in England, and the impact it had on Anglo-American relations. The author also showcases the differences between English and American cultures. In this chapter, the author discusses the cultural life in Rochester, New York, in the s. The city of the s is often referred to as 'Mr Eastman's town'. Economically, the first three decades of the twentieth century had been described as Rochester's golden age, and the centrality of Eastman-Kodak to the city's prosperity had important cultural consequences.

What is the role of place in historical understanding — including that of the academic and their process? They are institutions that collect, safeguard and make accessible artefacts and specimens, which they hold in trust for society. You're not logged in. Traditional collections seem to have little role to play in such a context, and exhibition events with marketing interests drift apart from collection activities and research under the pressure of cultural policies. The museum is a structure that can accommodate objects, exhibitions, research and development projects.
